Bus filled with canned goods and words "Stuff the Bus"The Lakota Board of Education’s 14th annual district-wide food drive for Reach Out Lakota will run Oct. 11 through Oct. 22, leading right up to National Make a Difference Day on Oct. 23. In true “WE are Lakota” fashion, the district is challenging families, staff and community members to “stuff the bus” with canned goods and other non-perishables needed by the primary relief organization for families in West Chester and Liberty townships.

“This year’s theme, ‘WE are Better Together,’ is a core component to the success of this community-wide event. We can do so much better together than we can divided,” said Lakota Board of Education President Kelley Casper. “On behalf of your school board, we thank you for coming together to support Reach Out Lakota in its mission to assist our Lakota families.”

The district-wide food drive is Reach Out Lakota’s largest collection and comes during the pantry’s busiest month of the year. In 2020, the organization gave out 205,000 meals. That’s the equivalent of over 246,000 pounds of food valued at over $400,000. Through September, the organization has served more families in 2021 than all of 2020.

“The annual food drive is a long-standing Lakota tradition that our students, staff and residents have always supported,” added Lakota Superintendent Matthew Miller. “No matter the circumstances, I am always amazed at the incredible generosity displayed by this community to meet the growing needs of our neighbors.”

The drive is open to the entire community. In addition to a final opportunity to donate at the Lakota East versus Lakota West football game on Friday, Oct. 22 at Lakota West, beginning at 6:30 p.m., donation bins are also available at every Lakota building for the duration of the drive. Without the typical crosstown competition to help drive participation this year, Lakota is returning to a friendly district-wide competition. The school with the most donated items will receive an extended visit from Lakota’s therapy dog, Biggs.

Since introducing the “Stuff the Bus” theme, the drive has seen a steady year-over-year increase. Last year, the Lakota community contributed nearly 15,500 pounds of canned goods and other non-perishable items.

"Reach Out Lakota is so fortunate to have the local support of the Lakota school system.  Working together, we are better and we can serve this community better,” said Scott Stephens, CEO and executive director for Reach Out Lakota.

“COVID has taught us that any family at any time can be hit with an emergency that forces them to reach out to others for help. Because of the generosity of the parents, students and staff in the Lakota School district, Reach Out Lakota is here to provide food, clothing and school supplies to those who find themselves in a tough situation,” Stephens continued.
