This is the image for the news article titled WE are Prepared: Fall 2020 UpdateAs Lakota prepares for a potentially different start to the 2020-2021 school year, Superintendent Matthew Miller shared the following update with parents and staff on June 23. While we await guidance from Governor DeWine, the Ohio Department of Education, the Ohio Department of Health and the Butler County Health Department, we want to share the principles guiding our plans and all upcoming opportunities and resources to stay informed as the summer continues.

WE are Prepared: 2020-2021 Responsible Reopening features a school with open doorsDear Lakota Parents & Guardians,

We know you’re probably as eager as we are to confirm the exact plan for a safe return to school this fall. Despite the uncertainties, WE want to be prepared for multiple scenarios and we are committed to being completely transparent as we navigate through our planning process.

Just as the case was for our transition to remote learning last spring, how schools reopen in the fall will depend largely on requirements and guidance from Governor DeWine, the Ohio Department of Health, the Ohio Department of Education and the Butler County Health Department. Lakota is also relying on feedback gathered from parents, staff and students, to build out plans for the upcoming school year.

As our mission statement and strategic plan states, WE are committed to a personalized learning experience for every student. As such, our goal for the 2020-2021 school year is to provide in-person instruction for our students as much as possible. As we await additional guidance, the district is planning for three possible options for the new school year: all students in-school, a balanced option that brings students to school with restrictions and remote learning if schools are closed by local or state health officials. Additionally, for our families who do not wish for their child to return to school in the fall, the Lakota Virtual Learning Option will be a 100% online educational opportunity.

Please consider these resources and upcoming opportunities to stay informed as we work toward a final reopening plan:

  • Thought Exchange Results: Lakota recently hosted a ThoughtExchange, a unique online surveying tool the district introduced earlier this year, to gather input on considerations for a responsible reopening plan. Nearly 4,800 students, staff and parents participated. View a summary of the ThoughtExchange results.

  • Virtual Learning Option: We know that some parents will want their children to continue learning at home. The Lakota Virtual Learning Option will be a fully online option for students in grades K-12, with priority given to students with high risk health concerns. More information will be available soon, including virtual sessions to answer any questions.

  • WE are Prepared Webpage: All updates related to our plan for the 2020-2021 school year will be available on Lakota’s WE are Prepared webpage. Please visit the site now for answers to all your back-to-school questions and an FAQ that will be updated as we confirm more details.

We will continue to provide open and honest communication as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience and we wish your family a safe and healthy summer.

Sincerely,

Matthew Miller
Superintendent
