While masked close contacts of a COVID-positive person in a traditional classroom setting may continue to attend school, they must still quarantine outside of the school day. This includes not participating in extracurricular activities such as athletics where face coverings are not worn.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 Welcome to the second semester of this most unusual school year. We are excited to see our students back in the classroom next week, including those who are returning from our virtual option.

 As you may have heard, Gov. DeWine has lifted the quarantine mandates for the traditional in-person classroom setting as long as close contacts are wearing masks/face coverings. This was announced at his Dec. 30 press conference and is based on a statewide evaluation of quarantine cases at nine different school districts, including Lakota. Moving forward, when we are notified of a positive test result, the following will occur within 24 hours:

  • Contact tracing in school will occur for all unmasked students and staff members, including instances like lunch and athletics when masks can’t be worn;
  • Any close contacts who were unmasked will receive a phone call from a school administrator notifying them of the need to quarantine and a follow-up email with specific instructions;
  • A low-risk exposure letter will be sent to all classes, buses and extracurricular activities associated with the positive person; and
  • A letter will also be sent to the school’s parents and staff notifying them of the positive case.

 Please understand that this change applies only to close contacts of a positive case in the traditional classroom. Anyone identified as a close contact to a positive case outside of school will need to follow the quarantine procedures as directed by their physician or the Butler County Health Department (BCHD).

 Prior to winter break, we announced that the BCHD approved the new quarantine guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Unmasked close contacts to a positive case have the following quarantine options:

  • 14 days from the last date of contact;
  • 10 days from the last date of contact and continue monitoring for symptoms through day 14; or
  • 7 days from the last date of contact with a negative test result on day 5 or later and continue monitoring for symptoms through day 14.

 Finally, our new dashboard will be available on our website beginning Jan. 13. As we communicated in our Dec. 15 newsletter, a daily update will be posted each morning showing the student attendance rate and number of student and staff positive cases for the day prior. On Mondays, a summary of the prior week will be posted. We believe that the daily attendance rate will give our community a better understanding of the impact COVID-19 and other illnesses are having on our schools.

 Educating our students in the safest way we can remains our top priority. We are excited to have so many of our students back in our classrooms soon. As always, thank you for your continued support of Lakota Local Schools.
