Kindergarten

About Our Program

Lakota is proud to offer a kindergarten program that offers the highest quality foundation of learning, either in a half-day or full-day environment. Here's a look inside just one of our early childhood schools, Wyandot, and what your child can expect upon entering kindergarten.

All-Day Kindergarten

Lakota has been offering an all-day kindergarten option since the 2014-2015 school year. We began this pilot project with two tuition-based classrooms per school. After the first year, a new state funding model allowed us to expand to four classrooms per school and offer the option tuition-free using a lottery system.

After the application deadline, students will be selected randomly by lottery. Students will not be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Age Requirements

To enroll in the following year's kindergarten program, a child must be five years old on or before Aug. 1. A child who turns five after Aug. 1 AND on or before Dec. 31 may be eligible for Early Entrance to Kindergarten, provided an evaluation team recommends Early Entrance. Parents seeking more information about early entrance should contact Gifted Services at (513) 644-1186 or go to the Early Entrance webpage.
Note - Registration for Early Entrance closes May 12.

Kindergarten Assessment Days

Lakota begins to gather data about student performance before students enter kindergarten. This allows principals to create class rosters that best meet the needs of incoming students.

During the assessment with one of Lakota's certified K-1 teachers, students will be asked to complete a variety of tasks related to literacy and numeracy. These assessments are traditionally administered in the first few weeks of school.

Parents also have the option to participate in one of Lakota's Kindergarten Assessment Days during the summer before school starts. In this way, teachers and students will benefit from more instructional time in the classroom and a data-based classroom placement. Click here for more information about this process.

Registration Information

Kindergarten registration usually opens at the end of February and extends through the end of March.

All registration dates and applications are available on the Enrollment Center's Kindergarten Registration site.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are AM/PM sessions determined?
Morning and afternoon attendance times are determined geographically.

May I open enroll my child into a different session?

Occasionally, parents request that their child switch from the AM session to the PM session, or PM to AM. This is usually done for childcare reasons. It is important to note that there is no guarantee that these requests will be approved. It is crucial that AM and PM sessions are balanced to maximize the use of classroom space. Therefore, parents who request a change in session should have a back-up plan in case the request cannot be approved.

How much are school fees in kindergarten?
School fees are established in the spring for the following school year. Visit the student fees page for more information.

How do I prepare my child for kindergarten?
There are several helpful websites to determine your child's readiness for kindergarten.

Ready for Kindergarten

Is the half-day kindergarten option still available?
Yes. Lakota will also continue to offer its half-day, tuition-free option for parents who prefer it. Students who are not selected in the lottery will be placed on a wait list and automatically enrolled in half-day kindergarten at the school in their attendance zone.

How do I find out my child's bus assignment?

Bus schedules are posted on the district's website one or two weeks prior to the start of school. A link will be provided on the homepage of the district's website. You will need to have your child's student ID number to complete the search. The search will provide you with your child’s pick-up location and time (to school) and drop-off location and time. Your child's student ID will be included on the face of the envelope of an informational letter mailed to you in June or July. Additional information regarding transportation procedures can be found on the Transportation Department website
