Volunteer: Share Your Time, Voice & Expertise
Lakota has many forums through which parents and community members can
get involved and contribute to their local schools.
From the District Parent Council
and the District Wellness Committee
to the Finance Committee
and President's Council (for PTA and PTO leaders), just to name a few,
there is a place for everyone.
Perhaps you're interested in volunteering
in the classroom or as part of an after-school activity? Our school leaders are continuously seeking out volunteers, either
individuals or small groups, to support initiatives in their classrooms
and schools. Contact the principal at any Lakota school
and share your
desire to get involved. If you're not tied to any one particular school, contact the Media & Community Relations Department
to share your interest and we'll work to find you a match where there's a need.
Background Checks & Fingerprinting
For the safety of all Lakota students, all volunteers working directly with children and not under the supervision of a Lakota staff person, are required to provide fingerprints for the purpose of conducting a criminal background check. Per board policy, this procedure is to be conducted at the volunteer's expense, once every five years, as required by law. Please visit the Human Resources
section for additional information about cost and fingerprinting hours of operation.
Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Awards
Every year, the District Parent Council
(DPC) helps Lakota honor its most dedicated volunteers as recipients of the esteemed Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award
. Honoring a volunteer at the district level and from each of Lakota’s 22 schools, the award commemorates a former parent volunteer and Union Elementary PTA president, Barb Bossu.
The award was established in 1990 to commemorate Barb’s very special dedication to public education. The DPC determines the district winner and each building determines its own school recipient, as nominated by members of the school community. All honorees are recognized at a district-wide ceremony near the end of the school year.
