Lakota East Student Wins USA Today Free Spirit First Amendment Scholarship
Spark Co-chief Editor Dan Sand was named the Ohio winner of the USA Today Free Spirit First Amendment Scholarship this week. She earned a $1,000 scholarship and a free, five-day trip to Washington D.C. in April for the annual Free Spirit First Amendment conference. Sand, who had to produce an extensive writing portfolio demonstrating her coverage of global issues and free speech issues, is now a semi finalist for the National Free Spirit Award, and the $20,000 prize.

Each state has a male and female scholarship winner that qualifies for the national competition, which is judged during the five-day D.C. convention. Sand is the fifth consecutive Spark editor to qualify of the national prize. Past winners include Abbey McMahon, Caitlyn Zachry, Dede Pan and Trisha Patel.
