Butler County MetroParks Operations Internship

Butler County MetroParks Operations Internship

Internship Overview

The Operations Intern will spend time each day with different staff throughout the organization. They will learn what positions in Operations look like from a front-line Park Maintenance Technician to the Director of Operations. This experience is an excellent opportunity for students to see how parks provide services to the community and operate on a wide scale.

Listing of shadow rotations/departments students will see:

Day One – Learn what a Park Maintenance Technician position involves – from custodial work to landscaping, setting up for a large scale tournament - day one will be boots on the ground.

Day Two – Spend your day with the Turfgrass Manager and learn what turfgrass management entails. You’ll learn about everything from mowing to chemical application – and will get to see the equipment that is used to maintain VOA’s Athletic Complex which has some of the best turf around.

Day Three – Learn about Park Management from our Senior Park Manager. Learn what moving up in an organization like MetroParks looks like – some field work, some administrative work, but all management of budgets, schedules and more.

Day Four – Spend time with the Director of Operations. You’ll learn about MetroParks as a whole, our properties, and what it takes to manage over 5,000 acres of property across the county.

Day Five – Spend time with Natural Resources and Conservation. You’ll learn about conservation efforts – our land stewardship crew takes care of everything from removing invasive species (both plant and animal), managing a prescribed burn to planning plantings of native species.

Rotations are subject to change, and students will experience each area to gain an understanding of all levels of operations in a park district.
