In accordance with statute, the Superintendent shall require, from the parent of each student of compulsory school age or from an adult student who has been absent from school or from class for any reason, a statement of the cause for such absence. The Board of Education reserves the right to verify such statements and to investigate the cause of each single absence or prolonged absence.
The Board considers the following factors to be reasonable excuses for time missed at school:
A. personal illness (a doctor's note may be required)
B. appointment with a health care provider
C. illness in the family requiring the student's presence
D. quarantine of the home
E. death in the family
F. necessary work at home due to parent/guardian illness or incapacity
G. approved religious expression days (up to 3 per year, with prior written consent)
H. approved out-of-state travel (up to a 24 hours per year for District-approved activities)
I. medically necessary leave for pregnant students
J. service as a precinct election officer
K. college visits (with written verification)
L. foster care or court-related absences
M. homelessness
N. other 'good cause' approved by the Superintendent
Students are expected to complete all missed assignments following an excused absence.
