Title I, Part A is the largest federal program supporting K–12 public education. It provides funding to school districts to help ensure that every child has access to a fair, equitable, and high-quality education.
Title I is part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and focuses on supporting schools that serve large numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families.
The goal of Title I funding is to close achievement gaps and help all students meet challenging academic standards.
Title I funds give schools extra support on top of their regular funding. The money is used for programs and services that are proven to help students learn and grow.
Instructional Support: Extra help in reading, math, and other subjects through small-group instruction, tutoring, or specialized programs that help students meet grade-level expectations.
Parent and Family Engagement: Activities that help parents and families become active partners in their child’s education. This may include family literacy events or workshops.
Targeted Support for Specific Groups: Districts must reserve a portion of Title I funds to support students experiencing homelessness, no matter which school they attend. Funds also help provide equitable services to eligible children in private schools.
In Lakota, there are 10 eligible schools utilizing a Targeted Assistance Model in which funds are used to provide supplemental instructional services exclusively to specifically identified children who have the greatest need. The overall goal is to help these identified students meet state academic standards.
All Title I instruction is in addition to, not in place of, the core instruction in reading or math.
