Sohom is a senior at Lakota West and has been involved in Cyber for three years. When Sohom was a sophomore, he decided to take the brand new elective: Cyber Security I. He has always had a passion for computer science. Once he attended the class, he knew it was the best fit for him. He thoroughly enjoyed his first year and has been hooked ever since.

After being a part of the program for three years, Sohom can safely claim his favorite parts of the class were the Cyber competitions. A few examples would be the National Cyber League Competitions and Cyber Patriot. He found them to be “...really helpful and competitively enjoyable”. Not only were the competitions valuable to Sohom, but so were the people he met through the program and of course his CyberSecurity teacher, Mr. Dougherty.

This past year, Sohom has been working on achieving the Comp TIA A+ certification. In order to obtain the certification, one must pass an entry level IT exam that is made up of two parts: basic hardware and software of day to day technology. Through Sohom’s Cyber courses, he learned about Percipio. Percipo is a digital learning platform; users can search for learning content and answers using an in-browser search function. For Sohoms case, Percipio included courses for both CompTIA tests. He was able to watch videos and take practice tests through the website. Mr. Dougherty also introduced him to a website called ExamCompass, which he also used to take practice exams. Sohom shares that his best strategy for studying for the exam is to take good quality notes during the Percipio videos. He made sure to not just watch, but actively learn the information. For other students looking to earn their A+ certificate, Sohom suggests, “take the practice exams on learn mode at first, so you can learn from your previous mistakes”.  After acquiring the A+ certification, Sohom has begun studying and working hard for future exams. He plans to earn the Security+ certification, Sinclair Ethical Hacker certification, and also various security CompTIA certifications. With all being said, Sohom Dey is a prime example of a hard working and high achieving student.

Sohom is planning to attend college and major in computer science. Sohom shared, “Over the past three-four years I have taken every computer science and cybersecurity course available at Lakota West ''. He has taken advantage of every opportunity he was offered in high school and out. Sohom has always had a passion for computer science; he has done programming courses such as khan academy and code.org. Over the summer, Sohom participated in an internship with the GRILL Airforce Research Laboratory, which was based around topics in computer science. This internship fully solidified Sohom’s decision to pursue the computer science path. Sohom’s ultimate goal is to have his own cyber security company that helps secure other businesses, making sure privacy is top priority and limiting hacks and data leaks. Sohom explained that the Comp TIA A+ certification is just the first stepping stone; it will be the base foundation that he will build upon. The certificate is held to a high standard in the IT world and Sohom will use it in job opportunities and career advancement.
