The distinction belongs to Lakota West Athletic Director Scott Kaufman and serves as a nomination for state and national recognition, to be announced in November.

“Scott continues to be one of the leaders in his profession,” said Jerry Snodgrass, assistant commissioner for the Ohio High School Athletic Association. “He has been innovative, while keeping the core values of athletics at the center of his philosophy. Scott is well-respected across the state in the athletic administrator profession.”

Under Kaufman’s leadership for the last three years, Lakota West Athletics has brought home a state championship and two GMC championships in girls basketball, four GMC championships in boys baseball, and more than 100 student-athletes who have committed to continuing their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

According to West Principal Elgin Card, Kaufman has also been on the leading edge of about 15 different facility upgrades and enhancement projects, helping stretch both district funds and private donations to maintain a model athletic program.

“Lakota West’s high school and athletics facilities are nearing 20 years old and some of our most veteran coaching staff are reaching the end of their careers,” Card said. “So it’s a critical time for our athletics program and Scott has both the financial sense to prioritize what’s most important and the passion to inspire others to help sustain our program.”

Kaufman says he is humbled by the honor, but owes much of it to the team of coaches, parents, students, administrators, trainers and so many others who support his work every day.

The Southwest Ohio Athletic Directors Association (SWOADA) presents the award to an individual “who exemplifies the highest standards of their profession and who, through their influence on the lives of young people under their direction, has made significant contributions to their school and community.”

Two of the Association’s board members expressed their support of the decision to honor Kaufman’s nomination.

“Scott has been a leader in the southwest district for 20-plus years,” said Doug Foote, SWOADA secretary and athletic director and dean of students at New Richmond High School. “Scott has worked closely with the OHSAA in dealing with several issues such as arbiter and competitive balance, and has taken the lead role in that as well as running sectional, district and regional tournaments. Scott is very deserving of receiving the AD of the year award.”

“Mr. Kaufman does an exceptional job as AD for the Firebirds and deeply cares about Lakota West,” said SWOADA board member and assistant principal and athletic administrator for Western Brown High School. “He is a great ambassador for the athletic directors in the southwest district and throughout Ohio.”
