A Message from the Director

Hungry children cannot learn. That is why Child Nutrition plays a key role in educating all of Lakota's students. I am committed to making sure every student has the proper nutrition so they can learn and achieve to their fullest potential.

Providing nutritious meals to our students is our commitment. We understand that well-nourished children are better equipped to learn. Providing healthy food and nutrition education are the key ingredients in educating students to make choices that will develop into life-long healthy eating habits.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the true stars in this process are the Child Nutrition Staff who have the complex task of serving the over 17,000 students daily. Their efforts are never sufficiently recognized.

With the passage of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, Food Service operations all across the country have had to change their menus to be in compliance. Lakota is no exception.

There are requirements for serving vegetable subgroups: Dark green, red/orange, beans/peas, starchy and other.  That is why you may see sweet potatoes, beans or romaine and spinach salad on our menus.  There are also calorie minimums or maximums for each grade group so you will see different portion sizes will be served at each grade segment.  Whole grains are mandated as well as fat free milk and protein amounts.

One of the biggest changes is the mandate that students must take either a fruit or a vegetable with his/her meal.

As you can see we have made a lot of changes to the menu. As we try new items, new recipes and our new menus, we will make changes as needed. If your son or daughter likes an item please have him/her tell the cafeteria staff. Their choices and voice drive what we place on the menu.

Thank you for your business.

Our Breakfast & Lunch Programs

The mission of the Child Nutrition Department is to provide nutritious and appetizing meals and quality service at reasonable prices to every student, every school day.  We realize that learning starts before our students walk into the classroom.  All students must have the right tools in order to achieve to their fullest potential and having the right tools begins with a well-balanced breakfast and lunch everyday.

The Lakota Local School District's Child Nutrition Department serves approximately 16,500 students at 22 different sites. Unlike some larger districts, all of our schools have full cooking kitchens. This allows us the flexibility to meet the needs of our students and the Lakota community.

We are a unique department in the school system because we are self-supporting. In other words, we receive no funds from the school district. We pay all operating expenses, payroll, benefits, utilities, administrative costs, food and supply costs, equipment and repair costs, technology costs, depreciation, etc.

Our breakfast and lunch programs are operated under the direction of the United States Department of Agriculture, Ohio Department of Education as well as the Butler County Health Department.
