Brown Named Executive Director Curriculum and Instruction

Brown Named Executive Director Curriculum and Instruction

At its April 17th meeting, the Lakota Board of Education approved Lori Brown as the district’s new executive director of curriculum and instruction. Brown has been the interim leader of the department since February.

Now in her 20th year in education, Brown has spent 16 years in Lakota. Most recently, she was the director of student services, overseeing gifted services, 504 plans (written documents that describe modifications and/or accommodations some students may require), counselors, nurses and mental health initiatives. She also worked on the district response to intervention team. “I was one of those kids who loved ‘playing school’ when I was little,” said Brown. “I loved getting a teacher edition of a textbook to play with. When I was in high school, a family friend asked if I would be willing to work with a young boy with Autism. I said yes, and my career in education was born!”

Brown’s goals for her new role include improving student achievement and growth, providing data-driven and personalized professional development for staff and creating purposeful career and interest pathways for students. She also wants to continue the evolution of the department’s “comprehensive and coordinated prevention efforts, along with student supports.”

As interim executive director, Brown and her team had already developed the new Community Curriculum Advisory Team in response to the Board of Education’s vote to approve an internal curriculum audit. “(The team) is going to serve as an advisory group to the curriculum team,” Brown explained to the Board at its March 27, 2023 meeting. “We’re going to look at identifying concerns within the curriculum, look at our timetable for reviewing curriculum within the (team)…and bringing those updates back to the Board.” This will also support Brown’s goal in her new position to “provide alignment, clarity and consistency in curricular materials and resources.”

“We are fortunate to have Lori Brown as our new executive director of curriculum and instruction,” said Interim Superintendent Robb Vogelmann. “Her experience, vision and passion for our students’ education will benefit Lakota now and into the future.”

Through her years at Lakota, Brown has witnessed change and growth throughout the district. “I think my favorite part (of being here) is all of the people who have committed their careers to Lakota,” she said. “There are so many of us who have stayed with and believe in Lakota.” And, she’s excited for the future.

“I am honored to be a part of this organization,” said Brown. “My passion is building systems and structures that bring the best of what we have to offer to our students, and I am so excited to continue to work with such a talented and passionate team.”
