Get to Know Lakota’s Class of 2026 Valedictorians and Salutatorians

With graduation quickly approaching, Lakota Local Schools proudly celebrates the seniors who have earned the distinction of valedictorian and salutatorian at Lakota East and Lakota West High Schools. These students exemplify academic excellence, curiosity, and commitment, while fully embracing the opportunities Lakota offers both inside and outside the classroom.

This year’s honorees include Lakota East valedictorian Ava Kohlhaas, who concludes her high school career with an impressive 5.0086 GPA, alongside Lakota East salutatorian John “Jack” Doyle, who earned a 4.9717 GPA. At Lakota West, valedictorian Lukas Jensen graduates with a 4.9973 GPA, and salutatorian Borianna Matey earned a 4.9620 GPA.

Though their interests range from food science and engineering to cybersecurity and medicine, all four students credit Lakota with giving them the foundation to explore potential careers and uncover their passions. Through specialized coursework, leadership opportunities, and strong relationships with teachers, each found a path forward that aligns with both their talents and interests.

Looking Ahead

Lakota East Valedictorian Ava Kohlhaas is headed to The Ohio State University, where she intends to pursue a career in food research and development. Ava is excited to blend her strengths in science and math with her interest in marketing and product development, calling food R&D the perfect combination of creativity and analytical thinking. Ava describes her time at Lakota as “fantastic,” crediting supportive teachers and strong friendships for making her experience so meaningful. She highlights Mrs. Slaven, with whom she studied computer science for three years and now serves as a student aide. Mrs. Slaven not only taught Ava technical skills but also provided invaluable guidance during the college and scholarship application process.

Lakota East Salutatorian Jack Doyle will attend Purdue University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Jack is drawn to the wide range of career opportunities in engineering and is especially interested in roles that involve collaboration and problem-solving rather than a traditional desk job. Jack says that Lakota helped him discover his career plan. “Lakota has a tight knit community that helps to push all kids to realize their potential and chase their goals in life.” Two teachers who made a lasting impact were Mr. Kreider, who made AP Calculus BC an engaging and enjoyable experience, and “Doc” Severns, who taught Jack Honors Chemistry and AP Physics. Jack credits their teaching and support as key factors in his academic success.

Lakota West Valedictorian Lukas Jensen will attend Miami University, where he plans to major in Cybersecurity and Computer Science. Lukas hopes to combine his interests to pursue a career as a software or cybersecurity engineer, with a focus on blue team (defensive) cybersecurity. He credits Lakota’s wide range of academic opportunities—especially engineering and cybersecurity courses—for helping him build a strong foundation for college. “Lakota offers many opportunities to discover different interests or careers,” Lukas said. A standout experience for Lukas was the Lakota Cyber Academy, taught by Mrs. Circello. Through the program, he earned multiple professional cybersecurity certifications. “Having her guidance allowed me to explore my interests and really grow in the field,” he shared.

Lakota West Salutatorian Borianna Matey will attend The Ohio State University, where she plans to major in Biology on the pre‑med track. With aspirations of becoming a doctor, Borianna found her passion for healthcare through both academics and hands-on experiences. She points to the Biomed program at Butler Tech, taught by Mr. Prochaska, as particularly impactful, noting that the supportive environment and close-knit group of students helped shape her high school experience.

More Than Academics

These students’ accomplishments extend far beyond GPA.

At Lakota East, Ava Kohlhaas served as president of Mu Alpha Theta, vice president of National Honor Society, co‑president of Women in Science and Engineering Club, co‑captain of the Academic Quiz Team, and a member of the cross‑country team. Outside of school, she co‑founded TechElevate, a nonprofit focused on bridging the digital divide, served on the leadership team for INTERalliance, and completed a software engineering internship at GE Aerospace.

Jack Doyle is co‑president of the Lakota East Engineering Club, helping lead community projects and preparing students for the state TSA competition. He is also an Eagle Scout, a volleyball player for both Lakota East and Cincy Elite Volleyball Club, a member of NHS, Science Olympiad, and Adopt‑a‑Class, and works at a local Papa John’s.

At Lakota West, Lukas Jensen participated in National Cyber League competitions, writing code for tools to support his cybersecurity studies and exploring his interests independently.

Borianna Matey stayed active through Tae Kwon Do, kickboxing, and involvement in HOSA at Lakota West.

Advice for Other Students

These seniors encourage younger students to take full advantage of everything Lakota has to offer.

Ava reminds students to enjoy the small moments along the way. “It’s easy to stress about the future and forget about the little things. Take time to appreciate the wonderful people around you.”

Jack echoes the importance of making the most of both academics and relationships, emphasizing that the time spent building connections with friends and teachers is just as meaningful as success in the classroom.

Lukas advises students to explore opportunities early and often, noting that Lakota makes it easy to discover and grow interests through its diverse course offerings.

Borianna encourages students to get involved in as many activities as possible to find what truly inspires them.
