Lakota Students Spotlighted in Columbus

On Nov. 13, four groups of Lakota students traveled to Columbus to showcase their achievements at the Ohio School Boards Association’s Capital Conference. 

The Student Achievement Fair at the Capital Conference gives school districts around the state the opportunity to highlight what their students have accomplished at school through unique programming. This year, Lakota’s groups included Technology Student Association (TSA) national winners from Ridge Junior School, Woodland Elementary students who took part in the National Public Radio podcast challenge, Lakota East’s Spark Magazine, and Lakota West’s Student Broadcasting Club. The TSA and Broadcasting Club are in partnership with Butler Tech.

Each booth was complete with interactive presentations for board members, superintendents, district leaders and fellow students alike to get a feel for each special group. For the TSA students, this included one of the fun breakout challenges they created. The Woodland students brought their school’s therapy dog that was featured in their podcast, the Spark students showcased past editions of their magazines and the West broadcasters showed a highlight reel along with their broadcasting headsets and sound mixer.

“I think it (was) very successful,” Spark member Colin Kunz remarked. “We were able to inform a lot of other Ohio schools about our mission and what we do.”

Lakota West broadcaster Jakson Forman enjoyed showing off part of their production as well, saying, “I enjoyed the experience of showing off our club and learning about new clubs around Ohio.”

All in all, it was a fantastic day for these Lakota students to showcase how their real-world learning opportunities make their school experiences special.
