Lakota’s Cell Phone Policy Follows New State Guidelines

Lakota’s Cell Phone Policy Follows New State Guidelines

The following communication was shared with Lakota families and staff on Jan. 14, 2026, confirming that the District's current personal communication device policy aligns with new state legislature.

Now that Ohio’s new law regarding student use of personal communication devices (PCDs), including cell phones, is officially in effect, we want to assure you that Lakota’s current policy—shared with families in August—already meets all state requirements.

Key reminders from the policy:

  • PCDs may be in a student’s possession, but cannot be used during instructional time, including study halls and in‑school events.
  • Cell phones must be stored out of sight (locker, backpack, purse), and smart watches may be worn but not used during instructional time.
  • Grades 7–12 classrooms have phone storage areas, which students are strongly encouraged to use.
  • Use is allowed only during passing time, lunch, after‑school activities and while riding a school vehicle if it is not a distraction.
  • Privacy expectations apply: No use in locker rooms or restrooms, and recording others without consent is prohibited.
  • Misuse, bullying or violations of the Student Code of Conduct through a device remain strictly prohibited.

Consequences for violating the policy follow our Student Code of Conduct and may include a warning, communication home, or disciplinary action.

We appreciate your partnership and continued support in creating a safe, distraction‑free learning environment. You can review the full August communication on our website
