Physical Education

We are having lots of fun second semester and learning new skills in the gym. I’ve noticed so much improvement in our strength, flexibility and endurance.  Through various station work we’ve explored the following activities/skill work:  speed stacking, scarf juggling, jump rope (long & short), soccer skills (dribbling, kicking, pull backs & trapping),  HIIT workouts with iPad, speed and agility course, basketball skills (dribbling, passing & proper shooting techniques), throwing and catching (overhand & underhand), floor hockey skills (proper grip & stance, dribbling with the hockey stick, shooting and passing), volleyball skills with balloons, beach balls or trainer volleyballs depending on your grade (bump & set). Games this semester included: Houdini Hoops, Dog Catcher, Toilet Tag, Snowball Fight, Centipede Bucket Brigade, and Kickball.  Some outdoor activities still to come are big parachute, football, relay races and more soccer. Field Day is coming in May! Look for more information in the coming weeks.

Second graders finished up their written state mandated physical education/health assessments! Woohoo!

MUSIC

Students have been working hard in music this year by singing, playing instruments and moving to music.  They have worked on learning rhythms by playing classroom percussion instruments and body percussion.  We recently learned about Ludwig Van Beethoven and some of his music, as well as Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald while learning about Jazz, and listened to Irish Music.  We will continue practicing rhythms and will learn a few dances this spring.  Students will be learning about sound and will create an instrument in class.  In May, we will study American composer, John Williams, composer of music for Star Wars and many other movies.

ART

Throughout the school year all grade levels have been creating artwork that aligns with the Ohio State Standards of Art. At the beginning of the year, we started with simple projects that reviewed basic Elements of Art such as Lines, Shapes and Colors. As the year has progressed our projects have become more detailed and advanced based on grade level, while also incorporating new Artists that inspire our Artwork.

As we begin to wrap up the school year, everyone will be bringing home their work that has been completed throughout the year, including sketchbooks in 1st and 2nd grade! The sketchbooks will have extra pages in them so that our young artists can continue to fill them with artwork at home.
