Bullying & Prevention
Lakota’s Definition of Bullying
“Bullying” is defined as an intentional written, verbal, electronic, or physical act that a student exhibits toward another particular student more than once; and the behavior both (1) causes mental or physical harm to the student, and (2) is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that a reasonable person under the circumstances should know will have the effect of:
- Placing a student in reasonable fear of physical harm or damage to the student’s property;
- Physically harming a student or damaging a student’s property; or
- Insulting or demeaning any student or group of students in such a way as to disrupt or interfere with the school’s educational mission or the education of any student.
Reporting Bullying in the School
Students and parents who believe they have information or have witnessed bullying as defined above should report it immediately to school personnel.
If you would like to report an issue related to bullying, please complete the Bullying Incident Report Form. The form can be submitted to any school personnel. Typically, the building administrator will instigate the investigation.
Please be as detailed and straightforward as possible. If you do not wish to submit your name as the informant, your confidentiality will be respected, but that confidentiality may limit what an administrator is able to do in the situation.
Bullying Incidents
In meeting HB 276 requirements, all bullying incidents are to be documented and publicized to the community. Bullying is Rule # 19 in the Lakota Student Code of Conduct and is defined as:
A student shall not harass, bully, retaliate against, coerce, interfere with, intimidate, inflict injury, cause another to inflict injury, or behave in any way which could cause physical injury or mental anguish to another student, teacher, or other school personnel. A student shall not intentionally direct to another student, teacher or other school employee words, phrases, or gestures which are vulgar, obscene, or degrading.
