Spark is the journalistic monthly publication and electronic website produced by the Journalism I, II, III-Honors, and College Credit Plus J-students at East on a co-curricular basis. The students research stories, interview sources, take photos, design layouts, develop artistic graphics, and construct the publication and the website. Students also handle the business aspects of the $20,000 budget, which is totally student-driven and managed.

Journalism students travel to state and national conventions where they interact with students from other schools and professional media experts. Spark is a perennial national award-winning program, with students earning awards and scholarships yearly. Students must be enrolled in a journalism class to be featured in the any of the media venues.
